Three-car garage: Toyota RAV4, Renault Zoe and a Hyundai i30 N for under £55,000

These three cars have just gained hi-tech new alternatives, but at these prices they’re still great options

Not long ago, we checked out the stunning new Renault Twingo, tested the new Toyota RAV4 and driven Hyundai’s latest N offering, the Ioniq 6 N. Those three cars are all fascinating in their own right, but what if you don’t want to wait until they go on sale? Well, on the Auto Express Buy a Car service right now, there are some solid alternatives from all of those brands – at a fraction of the price.

Hyundai i30 N - £21,999

Let’s start with the car that really got Hyundai’s N performance arm up and running, the i30 N. When it launched in 2017, it took on the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST and, amazingly, it proved to be more than a match for both. The ingredients were pretty conventional – a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, front-wheel drive and a slick six-speed manual – but with Albert Biermann (of BMW’s M division fame) at the helm, the Hyundai was one of the best hot hatches you could buy. There are cheaper examples on the Auto Express Marketplace, but we’ve gone for it in snazzy Phantom Black Pearl here. With fewer than 40,000 miles in six years, this one has barely been used.

Renault Zoe - £5,795

The new Twingo follows on from a rather erratic bloodline, which started with the iconic original in the nineties and also took in the wacky rear-wheel-drive variant of the 2010s. We’ve gone for the Zoe instead, because like the new Twingo it’s an all-electric supermini. The one we’ve found comes with the all-important larger battery, which upped the range from a rather measly 149 miles to a more useful 186 miles. At under £6,000, it’s a real bargain too, especially when you factor in the Dynamique Nav trim which includes heated front seats, a rear view camera, a Bose sound system and 16-inch diamond-cut wheels.

Toyota RAV4 - £26,295

Let’s face it, most people who buy SUVs rarely take them into the rough stuff. With that in mind, we think the Toyota RAV4 strikes a solid balance between an efficient plug-in hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive that will ensure you’ll never get stuck if you do decide to head off-road. The new RAV4 which arrives soon comes with the same underpinnings as this version, and while the next-generation model’s 60-mile electric-only range should prove useful, the 46 miles promised by this one is still impressive. What’s more, this is the mid-spec Dynamic trim, so it’s packed full of kit, with heated seats front and rear, a wireless smartphone charger, dual-zone climate control and automatic headlights.

If this Toyota RAV4 was snatched up too quickly for you, there are several more available through our Buy a Car service...
