Three-car garage: used BMW 1 Series, 2 Series and 3 Series Touring for £32k

This selection of BMWs should have all bases covered without delving into the expensive M division

BMW recently unveiled one of its most important cars for decades in the new iX3, which got us thinking which used BMWs you could get to fill our imaginary driveway with parking for three cars.

The Munich-based brand has a wide range of models available from top dealers on the Auto Express Buy A Car service, though these three stood out. As any good three-car garage should, they also complement each other by offering fun, frugality and fantastic practicality.

BMW 1 Series (2015-2019) 116d SE Nav - £7,895

The BMW 1 Series has been around for over 20 years now and in that time it’s developed into one of BMW’s most popular models. This second-generation version we’re looking at here introduced some much-needed extra boot space and interior roominess, while retaining the rear-driven characteristics that helped the 1 Series stand out in the hatchback sector.

The one we’ve got here is a 2017 model that’s covered just 62,000 miles - it’s also the 116d, so with its diesel engine it’ll provide an astonishing 78.5mpg on a combined cycle.

If this particular BMW 1 Series has already found a new home by the time you get here, you can find plenty more examples available through the Auto Express Buy A Car service...

BMW 2 Series (2014-2021) 218i Sport Nav - £10,890

Used BMW three-car garage - 2 Series, front tracking

Arriving in 2014 as a replacement for the 1 Series coupe and convertible, the 2 Series came with more rigidity in its chassis while also being bigger in every dimension than its predecessor.

Crucially, it drove better and even with this 1.5-litre petrol four-cylinder (which takes a leisurely 8.8 seconds to get to 62mph), you should be able to joyfully use all of that 136bhp going to the rear-wheels on a country road without worrying about breaking laws. The purists out there should appreciate this manual gearbox, too.

This Alpine White example from 2018 has only covered 44,000 in its history, so a smidge over £10,000 looks like great value.

BMW 3 Series Touring 330e Step Auto SE Pro - £12,995

The 3 Series’ success over the years can be attributed to its wide range of ability and that’s certainly on show with this model we’ve found. It’s in classy, understated SE spec, painted metallic Melbourne red and has the 330e plug-in hybrid so you can enjoy a very useful 33 miles of electric-only range.

For being under £13,000 and on a 21-plate, it’s fairly low mileage, too, with 83k on the clock. Having said all that, this practical (up to 1,410-litre of boot space) and frugal family car is no slouch - 292bhp will propel you to 62mph in under six seconds, with all that power going to the rear wheels.

If this BMW 3 Series was snatched up too quickly for you, there are several more available through our Buy a Car service...
