Hyundai i30

Overall champion

Hyundai i30

Our Driver Power 2010 champ is the epitome of no-fuss motoring. The Hyundai i30 benefits from a superb warranty and breakdown package – which we’ve already praised– plus the firm’s showrooms came 10th in our dealer survey. But that’s not all there is to like about the hatch.

Owners rated it strongly across all 10 of our Driver Power categories. Although the i30 didn’t top the board in any one discipline, its consistent performance ensured a clear overall victory. Highlights include third place for reliability, seventh for running costs and ninth for build quality – all key considerations for buyers wanting a hassle-free car.

Adding to the appeal is the solid engine line-up and simple, spacious cabin while the practical Estate is arguably the pick of the range.

It looks more stylish than the five-door hatch and provides 415 litres of luggage capacity.

We’d go for the 1.6-litre CRDi diesel, which blends lively pace and decent refinement with 61.4mpg combined economy. Specify the firm’s optional Intelligent Stop and Go (ISG) system, and CO2 emissions drop to 122g/km, too.

Comfort trim brings alloys, stability control, air-con and full iPod integration. But Premium adds climate control, leather upholstery and reversing sensors.
