Skoda Octavia

Hatch is big on value – and room.

Whenever you consider space and value in the same breath, the Skoda Octavia is sure to crop up. Not only is it one of the most practical family cars on the market, it’s also among the cheapest.

Earning the Octavia its place in this test is the entry-level 80bhp 1.4, which costs £10,913. Its petrol engine is a weedy performer, but you only need to spend an extra £1,081 to upgrade to the more capable 115bhp 1.6 FSI.

Whichever version you choose, huge versatility is guaranteed. Even in standard hatchback form, the Octavia’s 560-litre boot can swallow golf bags, family holiday luggage, bulky boxes and more. There’s nothing particularly innovative about its seat folding mechanism or the cabin layout – it’s just big.

The traditional approach doesn’t extend to the Skoda’s handling, though, as this car feels impressively modern. A facelifted version, due in showrooms in the New Year, will give the styling a refresh and bring a raft of minor improvements.

But even the existing model can still keep up with the class’s best when it comes to providing comfort and refinement.

Add prices across the line-up that make competitors wince, and the Octavia is one of the best-value family cars money can buy.
