VW Touran vs Renault Scenic

Can Volkswagen’s new Touran take the seven-seat compact-MPV class by storm? We find out as it faces Renault’s Grand Scenic...

VW Touran vs Renault Grand Scenic

Volkswagen means people’s car – and the firm’s latest model really is a car for everyone. The Touran compact MPV can seat seven, and the freshly revised offering is aiming to take a larger slice of the people carrier pie.

The practical VW, which has been on sale since 2003, has been comprehensively re-engineered both inside and out. It boasts a range of new engines and promises to be the most efficient Touran yet. Reworked styling takes its cues from the Golf hatchback, while the practical interior has been given a hike in quality and additional standard kit.

The Touran has a big name firmly in its sights – the Renault Scenic. To see how they compare, we put a seven-seat Grand version of the French machine up against the new VW. With a range of perky engines, a practical and flexible interior, distinctive styling, plenty of standard equipment plus tidy handling, the Renault is just what we’ve come to expect from the firm which pioneered the MPV sector.

Both models feature punchy 2.0-litre diesel engines and car-like handling, but only one can come out on top. Will it be the new German or its established rival? Read on as we reveal all...

Verdict

These two people carriers take very different approaches to solving the seven-seat MPV puzzle. The Renault will appeal to some drivers because of its sharp dynamics and strong engine. It also scores for its attractive styling and clever interior. However, practicality, value and running costs are likely to be prime concerns in this market – and that’s where the VW takes the lead.

Its sharp new look and high-quality cabin are pure VW, and they give the revised Touran a more premium feel than its rival. While it isn’t as engaging to drive as the Renault, it’s still capable and very economical. This efficiency brings smaller fuel bills, which are augmented by the firm’s pre-paid servicing deal and much stronger residuals. As a result, the Touran is the obvious choice for both private and company car buyers alike.

1. VW Touran 2.0 TDI Sport

The revised Touran builds on the strengths of its predecessor, with handsome looks and a practical, high-quality cabin. It really scores at the pumps too, thanks to standard-fit stop-start technology, which leaves the Renault trailing in the economy stakes. What’s more, the VW should hold on to its value more effectively. It takes a deserved win.

2. Renault Grand Scenic Dynamique dCi 160

The Renault is still a brilliantly practical compact MPV, well equipped and with a powerful engine which makes it a pleasure to drive. However, the penalty at the pumps for its stronger performance is too great. In flagship diesel guise it is too thirsty to cut it against the less powerful VW.
