Jeep Patriot vs. Suzuki Grand Vitara

Choosing a compact 4x4 just got harder, with the arrival of the revised Suzuki Grand Vitara and Jeep Patriot. We take our pick...

Jeep Patriot vs. Suzuki Grand Vitara

If you were one of the millions of motorists caught out by the recent cold snap, you’re probably keener than ever to try a 4x4.

To beat the UK’s notoriously unpredictable weather, and ensure you arrive at your destination, a tough all-wheel-drive car makes a lot of sense.

Equally, you don’t want to suffer when the weather clears, or pay the earth for the privilege – which is where these two models come in. The Suzuki Grand Vitara has always been a capable little mud-plugger, but the latest model aims to provide more on-road comfort and refinement than before – and all for the price of a compact MPV.

We tested it in high-spec SZ5 trim, with a Renault-derived 1.9-litre diesel engine behind its restyled front end. It tops the current Grand Vitara line-up, yet sneaks in around the £20,000 mark.

That’s much cheaper than upmarket models such as Land Rover’s Freelander. However, buyers in the market for a ‘cut-price’ go-anywhere family car have an alternative option. The Jeep Patriot is the US firm’s greenest and most affordable model, and delivers claimed fuel economy of 42.2mpg thanks to its VW-sourced 2.0-litre diesel.

The brand has responded to criticism of the original 2007 car by refreshing the dash and tweaking its angular front. And the flagship Limited model here costs less than £20,000. Read on to find out which we think is the best choice for tackling wintry conditions at the price.

Verdict

These cars, while not cheap, cost much less than fully fledged off-roaders, such as the Land Rover Freelander. As a result, they both demand compromises.

The Jeep appeals thanks to its bold retro styling. However, its interior is disappointing, visibility is poor and its 2.0-litre diesel engine lacks refinement. Suzuki takes a more traditional approach with its latest Grand Vitara, and the result is an authentic and appealing machine.

Not only is it more capable off-road than its rival, but it also has eager handling, a refined diesel engine and a flexible interior.

As a long-term ownership proposition, the Suzuki is more tempting than the Jeep.

Add in a highly regarded dealer network, and the evergreen Grand Vitara makes the better all-round buy.
