Speed cameras on M25 set to be switched on

Two years after being installed, variable speed cameras will finally be switched on

Motorway

The Highways Agency is set to turn on the variable speed cameras on the M25, two years after they were installed on gantries following a widening of the road.

The cameras, positioned between the M11 and Dartford Crossing will cover a 16-mile stretch of the road between junction 27 and junction 30.

However, the cameras will only be linked to the variable signs on the gantry. This means that if the signs read 60mph a driver will be caught for driving over this limit but when the signs are blank the cameras will not be active.

The scheme has already been rolled out across other parts of the M25, and drivers have been warned over recent days via the electronic signs that they will be turned on soon.

Speaking to the Thurrock Gazette, a Highways Agency Spokesman said. “We are in the process of commissioning speed cameras and, in August, are installing the signs between junctions 27 and 30 of the M25.

"Cameras are used to smooth traffic flow and improve journey time reliability. Regardless of cameras, speed limits are enforceable by the police. It is important that drivers understand that the onus is on them to ensure that they abide by speed limits."

Are you pleased to see the variable speed limit signs on the M25 activated? Will it help traffic flow on the motorway? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below...
