History’s greatest car photography celebrated in new exhibition

The Autophoto exhibition at Fondation Cartier in Paris will celebrate decades of cars on camera when it opens in April

Autophoto, a major exhibition opening at Fondation Cartier in the French capital of Paris next month, will explore the fascinating photographic history of the automobile from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day.

Running from 20 April to 24 September 2017, the gallery will bring together more than 500 “historic and contemporary” photographs depicting the evolution of the modern world alongside the car.

Visitors will be invited to “discover the many facets of automotive culture – aesthetic, social, environmental, and industrial - through the eyes of photographers from around the world.”

The show will include the work of more than 90 individuals, ranging from lesser known figures to acclaimed photographers like Ray Metzker, William Eggleston, Jacque Henri Lartigue, Langdon Clay, Justine Kurland and Jacqueline Hassin.

The announcement of Autophoto comes 30 years after Fondation Cartier last delved into automotive culture, when it displayed the Hommage à Ferrari exhibition in 1987.

Just as with the Ferrari show, Autophoto is accompanied by a commemorative catalogue, which features over 600 colour and monochrome reproductions, and is available in both French and English.
