Toro Rosso was the guinea pig for Red Bull’s Honda engine experiment last year, a gamble that seems to have paid off. It has been forced to take risks with drivers, too: Alexander Albon (third in last year’s F2 championship) joins for 2019, years after he was dropped from the team’s young driver programme. Team-mate Daniil Kvyat has also earned a reprieve, returning for a third stint after falling out of favour during 2017. Another Red Bull junior – Dan Ticktum – continues to hunt for the superlicence points that would grant him access to F1. Securing those would ramp up the pressure on Kvyat and Albon.
Our verdict: Toro Rosso has taken a leaf from the Haas rulebook and bought in many parts from Red Bull. It could be quick out of the blocks this year
