1. BMW M3 and M4 released
The eagerly anticipated BMW M3 and M4 were finally unveiled this week after months of leaked images and spy shots. Both will be powered by the same 3.0-litre twin-turbo engine developing 425bhp, making them 10bhp more powerful than the outgoing V8 powered M3 model. Prices start at £56,653 for the M4 coupe and £56,175 for the M3 saloon.

2. Porsche Macan passenger ride
With the Porsche Macan making its world debut at the LA Motor Show earlier this year, we finally got the opportunity to see what it was like on the road courtesy of a passenger ride. We won’t get behind the wheel ourselves until early next year but from our quick taster it seems like a serious piece of machinery, worth of wearing the Porsche badge.

3. Hyundai Intrado revealed
At an end of year media briefing, Hyundai took the opportunity to reveal a new Intrado SUV concept would be making its debut at the Geneva Motor Show next March. It’s unlikely the concept will preview a new model but it will show the development of the brand's Fluidic Sculpure design language.

4. Four-cylinder engine for Porsche Macan
Other news from Porsche came in the shape of the new Macan being available with a four-cylinder engine by the end of 2014. It will be the only model currently in Porsche’s line-up to be available with a four-pot engine. Petrol and diesel versions will be available but Porsche won’t be developing its own four-cylinder diesel, only a petrol motor.

5. Hyundai to launch N high-performance sub-brand
After announcing the new Intrado concept, Hyundai revealed at the same media gathering it was to launch an N high-performance sub-brand, which will be used on a range of future road cars. The N name comes from the Namyang R&D centre in Korea. The first car likely to badged an N model is likely to be based on the i20.
