2012 Canadian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton has won the Canadian Grand Prix, ahead of Romain Grosjean and Sergio Perez

Lewis Hamilton has won the Canadian Grand Prix. He becomes the seventh driver to win a Grand Prix so far this year, and it's Hamilton's third win at Montreal, following his victories in 2007 and 2010.

He finished the race 2.5 seconds ahead of second-place man Romain Grosjean. Sergio Perez finished third for Sauber despite having started 15th on the grid. Both were on a one-stop strategy.

Pole-sitter Sebastian Vettel was first into turn one, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, and the reigning world champion had established a 1.4 second lead by the third lap.

Vettel pitted on lap 16 for a set of soft tyres and rejoined sixth. Hamilton pitted shortly afterwards allowing Alonso to take the lead. All three pushed hard but by lap 22, Hamilton had regained the lead.

Following another pit stop on lap 50, Hamilton was third behind Vettel and Alonso. But his fresher tyres meant that he was able to pass both with just six laps to go, allowing the McLaren driver his first win since Abu Dhabi last year.

Sebastian Vettel finished the race fourth, having pitied for a fresh set of tyres. He then recorded the fastest lap of the weekend on the final lap.

Fernando Alonso finished fifth, having only just managed to stay ahead of Nico Rosberg. Like Perez and Grosjean, Alonso was on a one-stop strategy but his tyres had dropped off with just a few laps to go.

Mark Webber finished seventh after struggling with traffic. Kimi Raikkonen, Kamui Kobayashi and Felipe Massa - who spun on lap six after getting too close to the Wall of Champions - complete the top 10.

Hamilton's teammate Jenson Button had a dismal weekend. Having qualified 10th, he finishing 16th.

Michael Schumacher also had problems with his car. His DRS became stuck open, which caused him to run off the track on lap 45. He pitted to allow his team to unlock the DRS but they couldn't fix the problem, and Schumacher was forced to retire.

It was also a tough weekend for HRT. Narain Karthikeyan spun at turn one and only managed to reach turn four before he was forced to stop at the side of the track. Pedro de la Rosa pitted a few laps later, only to be pushed back into the garage for the team's second DNF of the race.

This result means that Lewis Hamilton leads the driver's championship with 88 points, ahead of Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel with 86 and 85 respectively. Red Bull has 164 points, to McLaren's 133.
