New 2021 BMW X4 facelift arrives with new look inside and out

The updated BMW X4 line-up gets a new look and now comes with hot petrol and diesel options

It’s not just the BMW X3 that’s been given a thorough facelift for 2021 - its coupe-SUV sibling, the X4, has also been under the knife, with a new look introduced inside and out. The brand’s Mercedes GLC Coupe rival is on sale now, with first deliveries scheduled for September.

Like the X3, the BMW X4’s exterior makeover amounts to a sportier refresh, but the coupe-inspired X4 is only available in M Sport trim. The new front end design makes use of slimmer LED headlights, available optionally with BMW Laser Light technology. A new, slightly larger kidney grille and a redesigned lower apron with more angular vents and vertical air intakes appear.

Similarly, at the rear of the car the X4 gets new lower apron treatment and redesigned LED taillights with new lighting signatures. The standard M Sport trim means that the X4 comes with darkened exterior trim called High Gloss Shadow Line, while 19-inch wheels are fitted as standard. The M Sport brakes come with red or blue calipers. An exclusive paint coloured called Piedmont Red is offered on the X4.

Inside, M Sport trim means a leather M Sport multi-function steering wheel as standard, alongside Aluminium Rhombicle interior trim with Vernasca leather upholstery. Like the X3, the X4’s centre console has been updated with the new look vents taken from the 4 Series, while the switchgear around the gear selector has also been updated, with the stop/start button now placed there, and not on the dashboard. As for infotainment, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster lines up alongside a 12.3-inch central touchscreen system.

With M Sport suspension as standard, adaptive dampers are optional. Unlike the X3’s engine line-up, the X4’s selection is limited to four options - three diesels and one high-performance petrol.

The range opens with the X4 xDrive20d with a 187bhp 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with 48-volt mild hybrid assistance. Priced from £49,010, fuel economy of up to 49.6mpg is claimed with 0-62mph taking 7.9 seconds.

This is the only four-cylinder option in the X4 line-up. Sitting above the xDrive20d option is the xDrive30d, which uses a turbocharged 3.0-litre diesel engine developing 282bhp. 0-62mph takes 5.7 seconds and top speed is 152mph, while fuel economy stands at up to 46.3mpg with CO2 of 159g/km depending on specification. Prices start from £54,410.

The M40d is the range-topping diesel option, using the same 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine developing 335bhp and 700Nm. Priced from £61,120, 0-62mph takes 4.9 seconds and top speed is 155mph.

At the top of the line-up is the X4 M40i, which sits beneath the new X4 M. Power stands at 355bhp and 500Nm, but performance matches the M40d model with a 4.9 second dash to 62mph and top speed electronically limited to 155mph.
