New BMW X1 will combine Neue Klasse looks with old-school petrol power

EV and ICE powertrains will diverge in the next X1, but all versions will adopt cutting-edge new tech

BMW is preparing a big mid-life update for its compact X1 SUV, which will be revealed in 2027. Now that we’ve spied the car in combustion form for the first time, we can confirm that BMW will split its future X1 range into two distinct models depending on the powertrain, as it will do with the next 3 Series. The X1 will go on sale next year and should start at around £40,000.

Unlike the new iX1 EV – which will in effect be an all-new car – the ICE model spied here will share its body and chassis with the current generation. This is clear from these prototypes, because this model looks the same as the model we know today from the A-pillar back. The nose, however, is completely new – and just one of many changes this new generation will introduce.

Up front, small and narrow kidney grilles are clearly visible, with enclosed headlights on either side similar to those on the new iX3, the first of BMW’s new generation of Neue Klasse models. However, with a need to cool the combustion engine behind, the lower portion of the kidneys will be open to allow some airflow through into the engine bay.

Less fundamental changes have been made at the side and rear of these prototypes, but we expect to see new bumpers and sills, plus a new roof spoiler and exhaust pipes on sportier M Performance models.

Under the bonnet will be a similar range of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains to today’s model, topped by a high-performance turbocharged four-cylinder engine with around 300bhp. This variant will feature all-wheel drive, but lower-specification models will remain front-wheel drive.

The biggest changes will be inside the cabin, though, because it will feature a brand-new layout including BMW’s Panoramic iDrive. This is clear to see because the windscreen has a tell-tale black band at its base, which is where the full-width head-up display is mounted. This will change the whole cabin dramatically in terms of design and packaging.

BMW’s new touchscreen interface will be included, but we don’t know whether it will be the same 17.9-inch unit as found on the iX3, or something a little smaller and less premium, given the X1’s position within BMW’s model range.

As part of BMW’s quest to launch 40 new models by the end of 2027, this X1 might not be the most ambitious of its product roll-out, but it will be one of the most important. It has to compete in a tough, high-volume segment against compact premium SUVs such as the Mercedes GLA, Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40
