New 2023 BMW 4 Series facelift spotted on the road

Latest interior technology set to arrive on new 4 Series

The 4 Series is in the process of getting its mid-life refresh and new spy shots suggest BMW could reveal the new car soon. We’ve already seen the coupe, convertible, Gran Coupe and high performance M4 under camouflage but now it’s been spotted away from the Nurburgring on more conventional public roads.

These latest images show the Gran Coupe model testing, the most popular version of the 4 Series. At first glance there doesn’t seem to be too much that has changed, although beneath the camouflage we should see restyled side air intakes, lower front bumper and possibly a new grille pattern. We expect the headlights to take on BMW’s new upside-down ‘L’ signature.

The side profile is unchanged although a new selection of alloy wheel designs should be added to the 4 Series range. At the rear we could see a new rear light signature and bumper design. We’ve also seen the new 4 Series test in M4 guise and it’ll gain new bumpers front and rear, plus we expect a range of new colour and wheel options to debut.

As for the interior, with the 3 Series updated in 2023 we expect the 4 Series to borrow plenty of its sibling’s upgrades, including the new curved driver interface. Made up of a 14.9-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch driver’s display this gives more digital real estate to 4 Series drivers, but also integrates the heating and ventilation controls.

The next 4 Series will also pick up the slimmed down dash, with simplified controls and a new switch-style gear selector on all models except the M4 coupe and convertibles, which will retain the existing M-specific joystick.

BMW isn’t expected to amend the existing 4 Series engine line up, with coupe and convertible models likely to retain their pure combustion and mild-hybrid four- and six-cylinder engines. The four-door Gran Coupe will be the only model to offer an all-electric variant in the form of an updated i4, but none will integrate the 330e’s popular plug-in hybrid system.

The top-spec M4 Competition coupe and convertible will top the refreshed range with changes limited to the lighting and colour and trim options. They’ll continue to feature an ultra-high performance twin-turbocharged straight-six engine producing 503bhp, and also feature two- or four-wheel drive options, with the convertible exclusively fitted with the latter.

We’ll be sure to find out more in the next few months, with a market launch likely for the latter half of this year, completing the refresh of the 3 and 4 Series in their current ‘G’ generation.
