Three car garage: a new BMW X3 or a used sports car, luxury saloon and EV for the same price

For around the price of a new X3 you can have it all with this excellent variety of BMWs

BMW 3-car garage

If you’re a BMW nut then we might have stumbled on the perfect three-car garage for you. If you’re not a fan of BMWs then you should still read on, because with a concept-like EV, svelte grand tourer and one of the best sports cars of the past decade, this selection will be as good as any to convert you.

BMW i3 - £9,900

BMW i3

BMW’s first mass-produced pure-EV may have arrived back in 2013 and while we know technology in the electric car market moves quickly, in many areas the i3 is still cutting-edge today. The carbon-reinforced chassis helped make the i3 light, thin tyres and aero-efficient body made it efficient and the interior still looks contemporary even now. The example we found has the larger 42kWh battery for a useful 189-mile range, although it’s around town where the nippy handling and excellent visibility really help the i3 shine.

BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé - £13,300

BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe - front action

Somewhat at the other end of the BMW spectrum to the i3 is the 6 Series Gran Coupé. The swoopy, coupé-like executive genre really took off in the 2010s with the second-generation Mercedes CLS, Porsche Panamera, Audi A7 and the first four-door 6 Series. The Gran Coupé does share a platform with the F10-generation 5 Series, but to our eyes it has much more presence on the road. You don't need the full-fat M6 either, the 640i petrol or this 640d diesel will feel great on a flowing B-road.

BMW M2 Competition - £29,549

BMW M2 - front 3/4

When the M2 was launched we all had visions of its being a true E46 M3 successor, with its inline-six engine and compact proportions. The 365bhp twin-turbocharged engine was a bit of a let-down, though, with the revised ‘Competition’ arriving in 2018 with an M4-derived 405bhp unit and some chassis tweaks. The latter version is the one we’ve featured here, and it represents a lot of performance car for the money, at less than £30,000.
