Safest large family car: BMW 3 Series

The best cars aren’t always the safest, but if you want an executive saloon you can have your cake and eat it.

The best cars aren’t always the safest, but if you want an executive saloon you can have your cake and eat it. That’s because the BMW 3 Series was the top performer in Euro NCAP’s large family car class last year and it’s also our favourite compact executive model, especially in 320d trim.

As well as protecting both you and your family better than its 2012 rivals, the BMW is also brilliant to drive, practical and stylish. The 320d promises a great blend of performance and running costs – making it a fine company car choice.

BMW now provides a wide range of trim levels but we think simple SE spec is the one to go for. Not only does it include safety features such as electronic stability control and seatbelt reminders, but also Bluetooth connectivity, rear parking sensors and climate control. A generous 480-litre boot ensures you get plenty of luggage space and there’s enough rear legroom for adults to get comfortable in the back, making the 3 Series a brilliant all-rounder.
