Skoda Octavia - best used hatchback

- 1.5 TSI SE Technlogy (2024) | 9,000 MI | £19,995
Why buy? An award-winner when new, and now a superb used buy.
The Skoda Octavia’s trophy cabinet is groaning under the weight of awards, because it is beloved by owners and road testers alike.
Glance at the specifications, or drive one, and it’s easy to see why it’s so popular. For a start, it is a little larger than the obvious rivals, which gives the Skoda a boost in practicality. The rear seats have enough legroom to make an SUV look unnecessary, while the boot is bigger than those of many estate cars from the class above.
At 600 litres with the rear seats in place and 1,555 with them folded, it’s positively cavernous. Skoda’s ‘Simply Clever’ features make living with its cars easy too, with features such as an ice scraper in the filler flap, a car-park ticket holder in the windscreen and even an integrated umbrella.
It’s also good to drive, blending refinement and comfort with just enough enjoyment to keep it interesting behind the wheel – especially if you choose the sporty 261bhp vRS edition.
But even the lesser petrol and diesel engines are sprightly and remarkably efficient. The 1.5 TSI will be the obvious choice for most used buyers, but the punchy diesel makes sense for drivers covering big distances or who require a great tow car. The DSG option is popular, too; in this case you needn’t sacrifice efficiency when you choose an automatic.
Low running costs mean the Octavia is a popular choice of company car when new, and this leads to a steady flow of well maintained examples being fed to the used market when they are de-fleeted at three or four years old. Many of these will be lower-spec models, but this doesn’t mean any hardship, because every Octavia is well equipped as standard.

Kia Cee’d

- 1.6 2 (2010) | 84,600 MI | £2,390
Why buy? Prices are in banger territory, but the older Cee’ds still feel modern
The Kia Cee’d was the first of the new generation of Kias that could really match the best of the rest. It had the quality to rival a VW, the reliability traditionally associated with Japanese cars, and styling smart enough to match anything. The Cee’d has stood the test of time too, and even early cars should still have plenty of life left in them. That’s partly because the previous owners are likely to have kept up the servicing to validate Kia’s seven-year warranty.
Vauxhall Astra

- 1.6 Turbo Elite (2018) | 37,174 MI | £9,300
Why buy? The Astra looks much better value than fashionable SUV rivals.
Once a top-selling model, the Vauxhall Astra has found itself squeezed out by SUVs, budget brands and cars from premium makers. This means it is heavily discounted when new, causing a knock-on effect on used values, which makes it seem something of a bargain.
While it has never been a class-leader, it is good to drive and has an impressive engine line-up. The punchy turbo petrol offers a great blend of performance and efficiency.

Toyota Corolla

● 1.8 Excel (2019) | 43,600 MI | £14,850
Why buy? The latest Toyota Corolla marries the brand's legendary quality with a fun drive.
The Corolla has always had a reputation for reliability, but this generation was the first to add a dose of driving enjoyment, too. Toyota’s engineers injected fun into the way the car drives, along with impressive performance, although the CVT gearbox can take some getting used to.
If the previous owner has kept the servicing schedule up to date, the Toyota will also have the remainder of its 10-year warranty intact.

Volkswagen Golf

● 1.5 TSI R-Line (2025) | 10,300 MI | £22,595
Why buy? Plenty of choice, and buying nearly new will save thousands.
The Volkswagen Golf has been the go-to hatch for millions of drivers for more than half a century because it offers a guarantee of quality, style and all-round performance at a variety of price points.
These attributes mean they hold their value well, but there are still useful savings to be made by choosing a nearly new or ex-demonstrator rather than a brand-new car. While the sporty models are desirable, some of the special editions offer most of the style with lower running costs.
