Audi TT

Winner: Audi TT, commended BMW 3-Series Coupe and Jaguar XK

The fact that the first-generation Audi TT won or was shortlisted for this award five years in a row is a tribute to the company’s vision and sense of style. So replacing it was a tough mission – especially when you’re competing in a sector where looks and fashion are as important as performance and handling.

The bad news for the opposition is that Audi has done it again. The second-generation TT is as enchanting and seductive as the first version, and has leapfrogged all its rivals to claim the top spot in the class.

Although the exterior lines don’t have quite the same shock value that the original’s had, Audi has done a fine job updating a classic design, but added a contemporary twist. It’s a more subtle look, and while the profile is unmistakably TT, the front end bears more than a passing resemblance to Audi’s flagship R8 supercar. And that can’t be bad. Inside, it’s the same story. There’s more room, better quality trim and while it’s lost some of the brutal symmetry and simple architecture, the detailing is no less exquisite and features such as the flat-bottomed steering wheel are unrivalled anywhere else in the class.

But perhaps the biggest improvement is the way it drives. Where the old car was a little flat-footed at times, the new version is sharper, with hyper-accurate steering, better body control and a fresh sense of fun. Add in the impressive new 2.0-litre TFSI turbo engine and you have a car that comprehensively outguns its rivals.
