New Audi A4 Allroad spotted for the first time

More rugged, four-wheel drive A4 Allroad Avant spied on the road, set to go on sale in mid-2016

The wraps haven't been off the all-new Audi A4 for long, but now we've already seen the more rugged Allroad version out testing in disguise. The jacked-up, all-wheel drive estate is likely to be unveiled at the end of the year and go on sale in the first half of 2016.

Aside from the disguise, at first glance you'd struggle to tell this was the Allroad version of the 2016 A4. But look a little closer and you'll spot the tell-tale signs on this prototype, such as the slightly taller suspension, rugged wheelarch cladding and and more prominent side skirts. The integrated rear twin exhaust also provides a big clue.

We're expecting this A4 to follow the usual Allroad recipe, likely using the latest generation Torsen permanent four-wheel drive system rather than the part-time Haldex system found in the Golf Alltrack. The raised ride height will allow better ground clearance, and underbody cladding will help it go tackle off-road terrain.

Buyers will get to choose from the same turbocharged four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines as the standard saloon and estate, although traditionally Allroad versions are limited to the larger engines in the range.

This new A4 Allroad will provide stiff competition to the new Volvo V60 Cross Country - read more about it here.
