Audi A4

In the compact executive market, individuality is everything. It is no good simply offering a standard model and expecting it to fly out of showrooms; a more exclusive appeal is required.

Offering better fuel economy and cheaper insurance, the S line is ideal for buyers who can't stretch to the flagship S4. You might still be tempted to raid the options list, but the upgrades boost the A4's appeal nevertheless.

In the compact executive market, individuality is everything. It is no good simply offering a standard model and expecting it to fly out of showrooms; a more exclusive appeal is required.

For buyers demanding a sportier appearance, Audi has introduced a new S line variant to its A4 Avant range. Designed for drivers who want the looks of the flagship S4 without the hefty price tag, the S line features wider wheelarches, lower-slung bumpers and bigger alloys.

Inside, powered sports seats are included as standard, as is leather trim for the gearknob and handbrake. Our test model was equipped with Audi's proven 2.5-litre TDI diesel engine which, on the motorway, is reasonably refined and quiet - although it is beginning to show its age.

At £25,540, the S line is £1,400 more than entry-level variants, and represents decent value to buyers who are keen to have a sporty look. The spec list is mainly aesthetic, however, and options such as sat-nav will soon raise the list price higher.
