HUD-e head up display

Project your speed onto the windscreen using head-up display tech

Price: £99
Contact: www.hud-e.com

Get a hi-tech head-up display without spending a fortune on a new car, with the HUD-e package.

The clever aftermarket set-up connects through your vehicle’s on-board diagnostic (OBDII) port – under the steering wheel on our car – to project your speed on to the windscreen, so you don’t have to look away from the road at the speedo. It’s not cheap, though, and we expected the chunky box to feel better built for £100.

The supplied cable was long enough to mount the box on our dash. But it’s a basic affair – you have to stick it on using Velcro tape. Still, on the road, the system works well. The LED display shows your speed, plus your revs in a line of dots.

We were impressed with the clarity of the info – you can easily see the figures on the glass, regardless of the time of day. The speed read-out was accurate, too, matching the car’s speed dial and rev counter.

Plus, we like the way the LEDs for the revs change colour from green at low engine speeds to red when you’re pushing it harder.

Verdict

What is it?
A clever way to help you keep your eyes on the road
Problems?
