Volvo's City Safety sees insurance prices drop

Insurance ratings for Volvo cars fitted with City Safety AEB may fall by up to four groups

Volvo drivers may see a significant price drop the next time they renew their car insurance policy, thanks to the manufacturer's City Safety Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system.

City Safety - which is now fitted as standard on every Volvo model except the XC90 - could save drivers more than £100 on their next insurance policy, while certain Volvo models have seen their insurance groupings fall by up to four levels.

It is but one of many technologies employed by Volvo to keep road safety a priority, including Pedestrian Detection with full auto-brake and the newly launched Cyclist Detection system that joins Volvo’s Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system and Blind Spot Info System (BLIS).

Nick Connor, Volvo Car's UK managing director, said: "The continued introduction of all these lifesaving technologies links back to our Vision 2020 long term objective that by 2020 no one should be killed or injured in a new Volvo.”

Volvo's City Safety system was also applauded for its ability to help drivers avoid low speed crashes by Thatcham, which administers the Association of British Insurers group rating system for private cars and commercials.

Thatcham has proven that City Safety reduces accident rates and relevant repair costs since its XC60 launch in 2008. It also prevents expensive personal injury claims for whiplash caused by low speed rear end shunts.

Following successful testing of City Safety AEB, Thatcham has recommended an adjustment in the insurance grouping of Volvo models that feature the technology.

Howard Barron, Thatcham's Group Rating Manager, commented: "For consumers this should mean reduced insurance premiums and safer motoring, not just for themselves but also other road users.”
