New Volkswagen ID.X Performance revealed as all-electric super saloon

Volkswagen has created a wild concept based on the ID.7

A new member of Volkswagen’s sporty, all-electric GTX stable is about to be unveiled in the shape of the incoming ID.7 GTX, but before that happens VW has released an even more performance-focused concept - the ID.X Performance.

Volkswagen calls the car its “vision of an all-electric sports limousine” - which is what we assumed the ID.7 GTX would be, but the ID.X Performance turns up the wick, both visually and technically.

The current range of VW’s GTX-badged EVs, like the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX, don’t look too dissimilar to the standard cars on which they’re based. This ID.X Performance features plenty of aggressive exterior tweaks over the ID.7 however. There’s a new splitter up front and a large rear diffuser - both made from carbon fibre.

There’s also a not-so-subtle carbon rear wing, wider wheel arches and new side skirts to help accentuate the car’s stance. A brace of sporty carbon bucket seats and red detailing inside and out help distinguish the ID.X Performance as a more focused machine.

It’s not all for show either. It’s been lowered by 60mm and the sports suspension features stiffer springs. Although VW hasn’t pointed this out, it also looks like a bigger pair of brake calipers and discs have arrived behind the 20-inch alloy wheels.

The beefy brakes are just as well because there’s 558bhp on offer from a dual-motor set up. To put that in perspective, the standard ID.7 comes with 282bhp and we expect the GTX version to put out around 400bhp. The two motors are positioned with one on each axle for all-wheel drive and the drive torque is managed by the car’s ‘Vehicle Dynamics Manager’ - which also controls the differential lock.

This isn’t the first time Volkswagen has given a show car the ‘ID.X’ name. The ID.X Concept we experienced first hand a few years ago was a precursor to the upcoming ID.3 GTX and in the same way, the upcoming ID.7 GTX should be a rather toned down version of this ID.X Performance concept.
