Subaru Legacy 2015 revealed in Chicago

New Subaru Legacy saloon officially revealed at Chicago Motor Show, to go on sale in the US first

Following leaked images earlier this week, the Subaru Legacy saloon has been officially unveiled at the Chicago Motor Show. This US-spec sixth-generation model also marks 25 years since the Legacy was first introduced.

Subaru claims this all-new model combines ‘muscularity with agility’, opting for a steeply raked windscreen for a more sporting appearance and a chiselled front end with a new-look hexagonal grille. The angular front bumper houses larger air intakes, and raked back WRX-inspired headlights – which also mirror the taillights – complete the new look.

The production version was previewed by a Legacy concept at the Tokyo Motor Show last year, unfortunately the coupe like styling and sculpted panels of the concept have been substituted for a more conventional look for this showroom model.

More on the Subaru Legacy

A more sporting theme has been adopted inside, however, with a redesigned instrument cluster hiding behind a new steering wheel design. The centre console now features an integrated 6.2-inch navigation and media system, plus sliver ambient lighting now frames the brushed aluminium and gloss-black plastics.

North American customers will be offered two different engine options, a 173bhp 2.5-litre four-cylinder boxer engine or a more powerful 254bhp 3.6-litre six-cylinder petrol motor. Both transmit power to the road via a six-speed CVT gearbox and permanent all-wheel drive.

For increased performance and better handling Subaru has also increased the rigidity of the body and tweaked the suspension setup. There’s also a new power steering and Active Torque Vectoring system, which helps distribute power more evenly.

The sixth-gen Legacy will go on sale in the US in the summer, with pricing to be announced closer to the cars launch. The saloon won't go on sale in the UK, though - but British customers will be offered an estate version - previewed by the Levorg concept at the Tokyo show last November.
