SEAT's Nissan Qashqai rival spied for the first time

This is our first look at SEAT's new mid-size crossover SUV, due for release in mid 2016

It's been promised for some time, but finally SEAT is on track with production of its much anticipated SUV. Our spies have captured the forthcoming Nissan Qashqai rival testing in heavy camouflage, ahead of a debut at next year's Geneva Motor Show.

You'll have to look closely to spot familiar styling cues from the Spanish firm. The front end design is completely hidden from view, but the curved clamshell-style bonnet and angular foglamp surrounds are straight from the 20V20 concept.

At the rear the sharp crease in the bootlid is also a design trait shared with the SUV concept, while SEAT's trademark angular rear LED lights are also present. The overall design will likely be a toned-down version of the 20V20, with an adapted version of the current Leon's cabin.

The 20V20 concept that we drove earlier in the year was designed as a preview for three production SUVs in SEAT's range that will appear before 2020. The mid-size crossover seen here will debut first next year, with a Nissan Juke rival soon after and a flagship model based on the concept at the end of the decade.

The brand's assault on the market comes as sister company Skoda is planning a large seven-seat SUV for late in 2016. That will take care of the more practical side of VW Group's mainstream brands, while SEAT's two models, referred to as being like royals 'William and Harry' by insiders, will be more style-oriented and sportier to drive.

Now read our first drive of the SEAT 20V20 concept SUV.
