Renault reveals new 1.6 twin-turbo diesel

A new 158bhp 1.6-litre twin-turbo diesel has been revealed by Renault and could make its way to the Megane range soon

Renault has unveiled a new 158bhp 1.6-litre twin-turbo diesel engine. The engine is the first 1.6-litre diesel motor of its kind to be twin-turbocharged, which helps match performance levels of large 2.0-litre engines.

The results are 158bhp at 4,000rpm and 380Nm of torque at 1,750rpm. On top of this, Renault also claims fuel consumption and CO2 emissions savings of 25 per cent, compared to its 2.0 dCi unit. Economy figures are over 70mpg, with emissions creeping under 100g/km CO2.

The first time we’ll see the new engine here in the UK will be in the Traffic van. Although Renault couldn’t confirm at this stage, it’s also likely to feature in the Megane range sometime in the near future. In Europe, the engine will be available in Renault’s replacement for the Espace – due this year – as well as featuring in the Laguna which is due in 2015.

According to Renault, the performance and economy figures have been made possible by exploiting the firm’s F1 technology. The twin-turbo system, for instance, works sequentially to deliver low-end torque through to high power at faster engine speeds.

Elsewhere, cooling and friction reduction techniques have also been inspired by F1 tech. A transverse water flow system cools the combustion chamber, and flexible piston rings adapt to temperature and pressure to reduce friction and maintain efficiency.
