Porsche Boxster and Cayman axed with no new orders being taken and EVs on the way

The demise of Porsche’s mid-engined petrol sports cars will leave a big gap in the segment

Porsche’s entry-level sports cars, the 718 Cayman and Boxster, have finally been taken off sale with the company’s UK configurator stating it’s ‘no longer possible to place new factory orders’ for either car.

Porsche initially announced last year that its two mid-engined sports cars would be eventually discontinued. In a statement from a Porsche representative, the firm said “in the UK, deliveries will continue into the first half of 2026”.

The Boxster arrived in the Porsche range way back in 1996 as the brand’s first mid-engined car since the 914 of the 1970s. The Cayman arrived as a coupe variant in 2005 with the latest 718-badged, fourth-generation versions of both cars starting production in 2016.

While new orders for the 718 Cayman and Boxster may have ended, you can still choose from lots of used examples of each car on Auto Express Buy A Car. Prices currently start around £34,000 for a 2019 Boxster or £30,000 for a 2016 Cayman.

The move means the end for the Cayman and Boxster in combustion-engined form but they’re both set to return as pure-electric cars in the next few years. Auto Express has already caught both the electric Boxster and Cayman testing, the prototypes revealing plenty of design details ahead of their respective unveilings.

Porsche’s axing of the 718 Cayman and Boxster also puts to bed rumours that the ICE cars would continue to be sold like petrol versions of the Macan - which is now getting a new combustion replacement in addition to the Macan Electric.

The Cayman EV and Boxster EV were originally planned to go on sale by the end of this year, but Porsche has experienced delays to the cars’ development, including battery provider Northvolt going into administration in late 2024.
