New Chery Tiggo 8 has the Skoda Kodiaq pipped on price, with seven seats for just £28k

The new Chery Tiggo 8 is looking to hit the Skoda Kodiaq where it hurts, with the seven-seat SUV on sale now from £28,545. That’s nearly £10,000 less than our reigning Large SUV of the Year, and it costs even less than other rivals including the Peugeot 5008 and Kia Sorento.

You will have heard the name Chery a lot recently because, as well as being China’s biggest vehicle exporter for the past 22 years, it’s the parent company of Omoda and Jaecoo. Both brands have generated a lot of attention since launching in the UK in the past year. Now Chery is getting in on the action with the Tiggo 8, plus the Tiggo 7, which is a rival for the Dacia Bigster.

The Chery Tiggo 8 is available with either a 145bhp 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, or the company’s latest Super Hybrid powertrain for £33,545. It’s the same plug-in hybrid set-up offered in the Jaecoo 7 SUV, which is available now through our Find a Car service from just over £30,000 and brand-new models are already in stock with dealers.

The hybrid version of the Chery uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, one electric motor and an 18.3 kWh battery that’s good for up to 56 miles of pure-electric driving on a single charge. With a fully charged battery and a full tank of petrol, Chery says the Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid can also cover up to 745 miles before it’s completely out of juice and return up to 235mpg.

The combined power output is rated at 201bhp and 365Nm of torque, allowing for 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds. It emits just 31g/km of CO2, so could be an attractive option for company car drivers.

Unlike the plug-in Kodiaq iV, which is only available with five seats, the Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid offers seating for seven. If you don’t need to ferry a netball team around, folding down all but the front seats provides 1,930 litres of luggage space.

The Tiggo 8 is available in two trim levels – Aspire and Summit – with standard equipment including 19-inch alloy wheels, a 15.6-inch central touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a 50W wireless charging pad, around-view parking camera system, LED headlights, 14 driver-assistance features and a seven-year/100,000-mile warranty.

Higher-spec Summit models add a panoramic sunroof, a hands-free automatic tailgate, a 12-speaker Sony sound system, ambient cabin lighting, a heated steering wheel, heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, heated second-row seats, a head-up display and illuminated door sills.
