New Radford Type 62-2 Pikes Peak Edition unveiled

An extreme version of retro-inspired sports car will take on the iconic hill climb

Pikes Peak manages to conjure up some of the wildest-looking race cars as they push aero and engine breathing to extremes with the aim of blasting up the famous Colorado mountain. Now Radford has revealed its own participant for this year’s hill climb event, based on the Type 62-2

A post by Radford on social media revealed that the driver for the run up the 13.5-mile route would be Tanner Foust. The car could push for the rear-wheel drive record if not the outright record set by the all-electric VW ID.R in 2018.

The Type 62-2’s supercharged 3.5-litre V6 produces up to 600bhp in the road car, for the racer it’ll chuck out 710bhp. Radford claims a 0-60mph time of under 2.2 seconds and a top speed of 160mph. Plenty of upgrades have come to cooling system and the radiator to make up for the thin air it’ll find as it navigates the famous Rocky Mountains incline.

Radford has also set about making the Pikes Peak Edition lighter. The road car tips the scales at around 1,000kg but the race car sits at 861kg. To make sure it doesn’t just fly off the side of a mountain, we can see the huge front wing typical of most Pikes Peak cars and to the rear, an equally substantial rear wing and diffuser combination will help put the extra power down.

The body has also been widened and a large central air intake has been added. The new exterior tweaks will be matched by bespoke suspension and chassis upgrades too.

The end of the teaser video posted by Radford mentions the date June 25, which is when the 2023 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb begins.
