Sketch hints at MINI's new sports car

MINI patent drawing hints at a new 2-seater roadster production car similar to MINI's Superleggera Vision concept

A production version of the MINI Superleggera Vision concept is edging ever closer following the emergence of a mysterious drawing, reported to be filed by MINI at the European patent office.

Although the company has yet to give the two-seat roadster the go-ahead for production, the drawing shows what looks to be plans for a showroom model.

Full details on the MINI Superleggera Vision

MINI has denied any connection with the mysterious image, but it certainly shows how a production version of the concept could look, with a folding fabric roof, door handles and restyled wing mirrors all added.

Bespoke styling cues from the original Superleggera Vision concept can still be picked out, however, such as the subtly embossed bonnet, flared wheelarches and gaping grille.

The news follows the announcement from MINI boss Peter Schwarzenbauer earlier this year that the brand’s range will be cut from eight to five core models.

The current MINI Coupe and Roadster will be axed, while the Paceman also looks set to be dropped to cut costs and streamline the product portfolio. It’s thought MINI could introduce the open-top Superleggera to complement the five core models as a flagship replacement for both the Coupe and Roadster. A MINI insider revealed a production model is between one to two years away if approved by the board.

“Like a superhero, each of these cars has its own personality and unique capabilities,” said Schwarzenbauer talking about his vision of five core MINIs. “It is important to find the right balance between growth and profitability.”

A new Countryman and Clubman will join the three and five-door hatch, with a new Convertible also set to be added.
