New Mercedes GL revealed

The new Audi Q7-rivalling Mercedes GL has made its debut at the New York Motor Show

The new Mercedes GL has made its debut at the New York Motor Show.

The new GL comes with a more upright grille, flanked by LED daytime running lamps and chrome surrounds. The sump and rear underbody protection also get dashes of chrome, and completing the makeover at the rear are revised tail-lights and a new bumper.

While it looks different on the outside, the second generation uses the original GL’s platform. But the styling revisions have added to the length and width to give the car an even more imposing presence.

Inside, the seven-seat layout offers more shoulder room for passengers, although maximum load space is still 2,300 litres.

There are two models in the range: the GL350 BlueTEC and GL500 BlueTEC. The former will have the same direct-injection 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel as the previous model, but with a power hike to around 238bhp and fuel economy of around 38mpg. CO2 emissions fall from 235g/km to an impressive 192g/km. The GL500 will get the 4.7-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 used in the defunct GL450. This produces 408bhp, with 600Nm.

There's a few new technological updates to the GL too, including an around view monitor to make parking easier and a Crosswind Assist feature that helps drivers keep the car straight while driving through stron crosswinds.

The newcomer will resportedly be just as refined and luxurious as a Mercedes S-Class, as engineers have benchmarked the new model against the premium limousine.

Prices haven't yet been announced but expect the most basic models to cost from around £60,000.
