Mazda CX-5 4x4 2013

Here’s a car that proves you don’t have to pay through the nose to run an SUV. Thanks to Mazda’s clever SkyActiv technology, the rugged CX-5 is as clean and frugal as most family hatches.

For instance, the 148bhp 2.2-litre diesel emits just 136g/km of CO2 and promises to return 54.3mpg at the pumps. Yet this efficiency doesn’t come at the expense of performance. And although the high-riding Mazda is easily capable of heading off-road, it’s even more accomplished on the tarmac, where snappy responses and impressive poise make it genuine fun to drive.

Factor in a generously equipped and solidly constructed interior that delivers strong practicality, and it’s easy to see why the CX-5 was crowned Best Crossover at our New Car Awards 2013.

With its spacious and versatile interior, low running costs and surprisingly fun handling, the CX-5 is a fine choice for 4x4 buyers - even though it's considered more of a crossover than a true 4x4. It's not the best at practicality or luxury, but there's always a compromise to get those things, and the CX-5 is a superb all-rounder.The 503-litre boot can swallow a huge amount of luggage and its generous standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth connectivity and a touchscreen infotainment system across the whole line-up.
