Jaguar I-Pace leads winners in The Golden Steering Wheel Awards

The Jaguar I-Pace claimed the mid-size SUV category, while the Audi A1, BMW 1 Series and Toyota Supra were also honoured

Jaguar’s all-electric I-Pace has driven off with more silverware in one of Europe’s biggest new car Awards, The Golden Steering Wheel, run by Auto Express’ sister title Auto Bild in Germany.

The I-Pace – voted Auto Express Car of the Year for 2018 and World Car of the Year 2019 – beat the Audi Q3 and SEAT Tarraco to win The Golden Steering Wheel in the mid-size SUV category.

Judges included experts from Auto Bild, racing drivers including Hans Stuck and Sophia Flörsch, German Instagram and YouTube stars, plus Auto Express editor-in-chief Steve Fowler, who presented the winning trophy to Jaguar LandRover’s CEO Sir Dr Ralf Speth.

Other winners across the 11 categories included the Audi A1, BMW 1 Series, Tesla Model 3, Mazda CX-30, Audi e-tron and Toyota Supra, which beat the Porsche 911 and BMW M850i in its category.

There was some good news for BMW in one of the three reader-voted Awards, though. The 8 Series was voted Most Beautiful Car, while the Skoda Karoq was named Best Car Up To €25,000 and the new Kia XCeed was named best car up to €35,000.

The Golden Steering Wheel Award for Best Innovation went to Michelin for its Uptis airless tyre technology.
