10. Ford Focus ECOnetic

Ford Focus ECOnetic

The VW Golf has already proven you don’t have to buy a small car to enjoy low running costs. And the new Ford Focus ECOnetic also promises supermini fuel consumption in a family car package. Powered by a 1.6-litre TDCi diesel, it returns an amazing 83.1mpg, while CO2 emissions are pegged at only 88g/km.

This is another benchmark for a model that has set the standard for efficiency in the family car class. All versions of the Focus feature active grille shutters and stop-start to maximise fuel economy, but the tuned diesel in the ECOnetic takes things a step further. And even better, this car is available with all the same hi-tech equipment as any other Focus – from Active City Stop autobraking to self-parking and lane departure warning systems.

The interior offers loads of space for driver and passenger, too, although the boot trails most hatchback rivals, with a capacity of only 316 litres. Still, buyers will be able to forgive this when they realise they can have the best driver’s car in the family class while still enjoying such amazingly low running costs.
