Giugiaro GEA concept: ultimate luxury at Geneva 2015

Self-driving luxury car concept from Italian design house previews future of high-end motoring

Italian styling house Italdesign Giugiaro has given its new GEA concept its world debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

Focusing on mixing luxury with technology, the huge saloon gives an idea of what the company thinks ultra-high end cars of the future will look like. It says the real luxury will be time, equipping the GEA concept with self-driving autonomous technology as a result.

Giugiaro has definitely won the competition for biggest wheels on show here at Geneva, as the GEA wears massive 26-inch alloys with 60 spokes each – all of which have a different finish to them.

At the front the LEDs in the light clusters change colour depending on the driving mode selected – white in normal mode and blue when ‘piloted driving’ is activated.

The front and rear lights use Audi’s laser technology, with defined, muscular creases flowing away from the clusters and towards the middle of the car over the GEA’s wheel arches.

A swooping roofline gives the saloon a sleek look, while big suicide doors can be opened wirelessly with a virtual red carpet projected onto the ground by an LED in the door sill.

Once inside, there are three modes drivers can choose from, including Business, Wellness and Dream settings.

Business turns the GEA into a travelling office, according to Giugiaro, with two 19-inch screens dropping down from the roof allowing rear passengers to choose what information is shown. The front passenger seat can also turn through 180 degrees to hold meetings on the move.

Next up is Wellness mode. This, says Giugiaro, is ideal for long journeys because it allows passengers to exercise inside the car. Finally, Dream mode puts the focus on relaxation – joining up with the front seat thanks to a fold-out footrest, the right rear seat can turn into a fully flat bed.

The GEA is powered by four 190bhp electric motors, giving a total of 760bhp and a top speed of 155mph.

Despite using plenty of lightweight materials, such as carbonfibre, magnesium and aluminium, the GEA still weighs just over 2,000kg.
