Look out BMW, Borgward is back

German brand Borgward returns for the first time since bankruptcy in 1961, with a new car at the 2015 Geneva show

Borgward Geneva 2015 return

Certain established German marques are familiar to motorists across all corners of the globe, yet relatively few will have heard of the company called Borgward. But that may be about to change, as the firm is set to make a return – after a 54-year absence – at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show with a brand new car.

New car awards: Best executive car

Borgward first appeared on the automotive scene back in 1919, and reached its peak in the fifties as one of Germany's largest makers of cars and commercial vehicles. However, it hit financial trouble in 1961, declaring bankruptcy – and the name soon disappeared into the pages of history.

But the revival is now on, backed by original founder Carl Borgward's grandson Christian and business partner Karlheinz L. Knöss.

"We began shaping and designing the future of Borgward nearly 10 years ago and are now ready for the next step," said Knöss. The relaunch of the brand is set to be "incorporating the values and cutting-edge technologies that Borgward stood for".

Details of what the vehicle will look like or be powered by are yet to be seen, but the teaser image reveals a silhouette of a fifties-style two-seater open-top sports car. Our best guess indicates the show car will combine retro looks and design with modern requirements for EU cars, in a similar vein to British brand Morgan.
