Toyota recalls more cars

Toyota is to recall 2.7million cars worldwide, due to an issue with its steering wheel and water pump systems.

The recall affects 75,000 cars in the UK and includes certain Toyota Avensis and Toyota Corolla models, built between 2001 and 2009, and Toyota Prius models made between 2003 and 2009.

The recall is for an issue with the steering system, which can result in a knocking or rattling noise as well as a possibility of lack of steering response – though Toyota claims the car is still safe to drive. There are just nine reported cases in Europe.

Certain Prius models are also being recalled for a failed water pump in the hybrid system, which will be indicated by a warning light on the dashboard. Toyota says that there have been just three reported cases of the problem in Europe and that no accidents have been caused as a result of it.

Toyota will contact all owners affected by the recall. Owners can also check out the Toyota customer service website to see if their car is involved or call Toyota customer relations on 0800 1388744.

The announcement follows a recall of 7.4million cars last month for a problem with electric window switches.
