Fuel economy is a claimed 134.5mpg on the combined cycle, and emissions are only 46g/km of CO2. Also, the E 300 e will cover 31 miles in all-electric mode and can be charged from 10 to 100 per cent in under four hours from a standard UK plug socket.

The base model SE comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, keyless-go, electrically operated and heated front seats and ambient lighting in a choice of 64 colours.

AMG Line models start from £49,945, adding AMG bumpers and side skirts, 18-inch AMG alloy wheels, leather upholstery, an AMG steering wheel and tinted windows.

As usual, Mercedes offers a range of optional extras, such as the Night package. Available only on AMG Line models, and priced at £595, the package adds a range of black accents to the AMG bodykit, as well as a set of black 18-inch alloy wheels.

If you’d like to spend a bit more money, the Premium Plus package markets for £4,395 and adds a Burmester sound system, a panoramic sunroof, automatic powered boot closing, hands-free access and Mercedes’ parking package, complete with 360-degree camera.
