Our spies catch a disguised next-generation BMW 5 Series in Munich, Germany
Our spies have caught a test mule of the next-generation BMW 5 Series near the brand’s R&D facility in Munich, Germany.
An all-new 5 Series isn’t due to hit the road until mid-2016, but subtly different creases along the flanks hint that what you’re looking at is the next-generation car. The newcomer is expected to feature a more radical design than the model it’ll replace, with a sportier look inspired by the 4 Series, particularly around the car's stubby nose.
BMW styling goes in cycles, with the previous 5 Series being quite controversial, while the current generation is conservative. This car’s new look is likely to be inspired by the Gran Lusso concept – displayed at the Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance in Italy earlier this year.
Changes will extend to the engine range, too, with the car potentially using one of BMW's new three-cylinder 1.5-litre engines. Three different hybrid versions will be offered too, including a plug-in model.
The next 5 Series will also set new standards for safety. It’ll get the latest 3D stereo camera to spot and help prevent accidents. If law makers allow it, the system will even be able to swerve the car away from trouble at low speeds.
Also likely is a new head-up display that delivers more info to the driver. This will use augmented reality to project sat-nav directions on to the screen, so they appear to float over the road ahead.
