BMW 3-Series

Winner: BMW 3-Series, commended Volvo S60 and Audi A4

“Fierce competition between the prestige German brands is great news for buyers, because each new model raises the bar. The BMW 3-Series is the most recent arrival, and it shows.” Ross Pinnock

In a sector where style is so important, having the latest design is vital – and as one of the newest kids on the block, BMW’s 3-Series has something of an unfair advantage. It is the compact
executive to been seen in at the moment, and for the second year running our judges have awarded it the top honour.

Competition for sales is about to hot up in this class. But, while Auto Express has already driven the next-generation Mercedes C-Class and Audi is readying its new A4, they’re both a long way from used forecourts. And that leaves the smart BMW to rule for a while yet. It’s incredibly capable, with great handling, impressive refinement, class-leading cabin space and superb engines.

Add solid build quality plus badge appeal, and the 3-Series is a fantastic proposition. Better still, compared with last year there are plenty of used models: £14,000 gets you an entry-level 320i with above-average mileage in a private sale.

If you want the excellent 163bhp 320d diesel, you’ll need nearer £17,000. Pay close attention to the specification, as the low trims can look pretty sparse. If cost options were fitted, you’ll pay a fraction of the new price for them, but desirable kit such as Bluetooth connectivity and sat-nav will add to the sticker price.

An SE is typically £1,000 more than an entry-level model, and automatics attract a similar premium. Don’t be put off by BMW’s iDrive control system. It looks, and is, confusing on first acquaintance, but once you’ve lived with the car for a few months, it will be second nature.

Commended: Volvo S60

2000 to present

As sensible as a pair of slippers and just as comfortable! When it comes to value in this sector, there’s only one place to look. With plenty of kit, loads of space and some of the most relaxing seats we’ve experienced, the S60 is a soothing choice. It can’t keep up with its German rivals’ dynamics, but it leads the field for comfort.

Commended: Audi A4

2000 to 2004

Twice a winner in this sector, the A4 is a classy choice. Early models are starting to look dated, but we’d still have one over a comparably priced old 3-Series. The new BMW is more capable, though, and likely to hold its value better. Post-2004 A4s are much improved and S line variants look great, thanks to their purposeful bodykits. Check out the 2.0T FSI petrol and 2.0 TDI diesel engines.
