New Audi TT misses out on top Euro NCAP rating

Audi's latest coupe is marked down to four stars in Euro NCAP crash test rating due to lack of safety tech

The latest batch of Euro NCAP crash test ratings have been released, bringing an unwelcome surprise for Audi and its new TT coupe. The car misses out on the top safety rating, achieving four stars and getting criticism for its lack of advanced driver aids that can be found on other models.

The four-star rating means the 2015 TT lags behind other models in Audi's range, and falls below the standard set by rivals like the BMW 2-Series, which achieved five stars. Although scoring above 80 per cent for adult occupant and pedestrian protection, the TT suffered in terms of child protection and safety assist kit.

However, Euro NCAP officials are quick to stress that the test regime has now got tougher in 2015, meaning that new models from other manufacturers could also see ratings fall due to more punishing protocols.

Safest cars on sale

The TT went on sale late last year without a European safety rating. The main criticism of the car is levelled at the lack of autonomous emergency braking, a feature offered across the majority of Audi's range, as well as on less expensive VW-Group cars.

Comments about the TT's child occupant protection score centre around the coupe's lack of rear seat space to accommodate recommended child restraint options, which other '2+2' seat rivals such as the Peugeot RCZ will likely suffer from as well.

Alongside the testing of the TT, Euro NCAP put the 2015 Renault Trafic/Vauxhall Vivaro van and passenger minibus through its paces, awarding it three stars. Van testing will now be conducted alongside passenger cars, using the same strict safety protocols.
