You can make the most of the 349bhp in the 3.0-litre V6 turbo petrol, as the latest generation of Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system sends 85% of the power to the rear wheels. 

The 500Nm of torque is spread from 1,370rpm to 4,500rpm, meaning the S4 almost manages to reach RS levels performance. 

The S4 comes with 18-inch wheels as standard (although our test car had 19-inch wheels). With Comfort mode and optional adaptive dampers, the ride feels controlled and supple. 

Due to go on sale this summer, the S4 Avant is understated, refined and deceptively fast with a top speed of 155mph.

Considering the performance of the S4, the efficiency figures are good with 37.7mpg and 171g/km CO2. However, if you use the full power on offer from the V6, you may not reach these numbers.

The light and quick steering in the S4 gives you lots of grip, and the gearbox shifts into auto mode nicely, making the ride feel refined, with quick changes using the manual paddles. 

The first class material quality in the S4 highlights its position in the range, with sports seats and Alcantara on the doors. The advanced technology on offer in the S4, such as Audi's Virtual Cockpit, makes it very easy to live with.

Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system and new eight-speed auto send the S4 Avant from 0-62mph in only 4.9 seconds.

The S4 is flexible with frugal and effortless cruising on the motorway, ability on the back road, and 505-litre boot space in the estate form.

The S-specific styling options include swollen sills, quad tailpipes, bright mirrors and a small boot lip spoiler.
