Car fragrance reviews - 2013 group test

An automotive-themed fragrance makes a great gift for the car-mad. We rate the nine top brands

Car fragrance test

There's a staggering number of car makers with branded fragrances, so we've rounded up a selection and compared them to see which is the best for the car fanatics out there.

How we tested them

First, we lined up a Britain’s Got Talent-style panel of Auto Express staff which represented a varied cross-section of ages and tastes. The experts’ first task was to rate the packaging – you don’t want to present someone with a cheap, nasty bottle. Then, they gave their opinion on the characteristics of each fragrance, and crucially, whether they liked or disliked the smell. Finally, we factored in value, based on cost per 100ml and the longevity of the smell.

Verdict

Not surprisingly, each fragrance made us think of the brand it represents. We reckon the best all-rounder is Tonino Lamborghini’s Mitico – it smells pretty good, is great value for money and makes a nice gift, as it comes with a bottle of deodorant. Second (due to its high price) is the judges’ favourite scent – Porsche Design’s The Essence. Older men will like Bentley for Men Intense, which takes third position.
