Tell-tale suction cup marks on your windscreen can let thieves know you’ve got a sat-nav in your car.

So Auto 1’s new Universal Sat-Nav Holder could be the ideal solution, as the device is mounted on to the top of your dashboard rather than stuck to your glass.

Getting started is simple enough. Mount the wide and adjustable clamp on to the arm, stick your navi between its jaws, pop the heavy bean bag on to your dash, and its sticky base grips on to the flat surface of the interior.

This works well when driving on straight roads, but there are problems worth taking into account. When you get to your destination, you still need to hide your sat-nav, and it’s a good idea to stow the bulky holder as well – which takes up a lot of space in the glovebox.

Plus, the base came loose as we went round a roundabout, nearly breaking our sat-nav as it slid across the dash. And then there’s the price – £25 would buy lots of glass cleaning wipes.

Verdict

An alternative to the windscreen mount that many sat-navs come with, plus it can hold phones too
Problems?
Became detached on a roundabout, expensive, bulky.
Why buy?
No windscreen marks, wide clamp can accept a wide range of devices.
