Bierley AmeriCam K1 review

Keep an eye on what’s behind you with the Bierley AmeriCam K1

This 22mm bullet camera sits flush in your rear bumper and has a 170-degree lens, so you can see obstacles when parking.

The image is flat, not fish-eyed like rival systems, which typically only offer a 130-degree view. It’s easy to use and fully automatic. Unlike other camera kits, the monitor comes on as soon as you engage reverse.

There are no buzzers or lights to warn of hazards. Instead, the bright 3.5-inch LCD screen has gridlines laid over the camera image to help you judge gaps. The red, yellow and green lines highlight how much space you have, but don’t obscure the image.

You can use the screen during the day or at night. Bierley recommends you mount it in front of your gearstick, but if you already have a screen in your head unit, you can connect the camera to that with the supplied RCA cable.

You should be able to fit the K1 screen yourself in less than an hour. A drill attachment is included, and there’s only one wire to run from the rear bumper to the monitor. You just solder the cable to the reversing light and ground it.

Alternatively, Bierley can put you in touch with a dealership offering a great-value professional fitting service – they’ll charge you £20 to install it if you buy the £180 package through them.

Bierley plans to expand its range with a rear-view mirror screen by the end of the year.
