In-car tidies test

Which boot and seat tidies sort your in-car clutter best? We test 12.

Sumex

In recent years, car makers have really focused on cabin packaging. They spend millions on development to ensure there are enough storage cubbies and cup-holders for the most demanding family. Yet even though there’s been a big step forward in cockpit design, and space is used much more efficiently, aftermarket storage solutions are often still needed. These usually take the form of two basic variants – with the first being a folding box mainly for use in the boot to hold tools and equipment or to prevent large items of shopping from rolling round. The alternative is a seatback organiser, which is secured on the rear of the chair in front to provide storage for small items.

The test
We tried each of our 12 products in a Ford Focus, fitted in the boot or cabin as required. They were all assessed for practicality in holding a variety of products. These ranged from small tools to a puncture-repair aerosol, first aid kit and fire extinguisher. We also squeezed in typical bulky shopping items such as cereal and soap boxes, along with large drinks bottles. As well as their capacity, we marked each of our products for their build quality and price.

Verdict

The Sumex Organiser and SKJP Cargo Pal are virtually identical in spec, both offering useful options for tidying the boot. However, the cheaper Sumex sneaked the win. SKJP also offers the best seatback storage – it beat the Type S with its blend of features and price.
