10. SEAT Ibiza

SEAT Ibiza FR front cornering

The SEAT Ibiza offers many of the talents of its VW Polo cousin at a lower price. And many buyers will be drawn in by the sharper, sportier looks of the five-door and three-door SC.

Both models deliver on their promise with agile handling, albeit with a rather firm ride. And they make decent use of their dimensions to deliver a generous amount of interior space. Boot size compares well with other superminis, too, at 292 litres or 554 litres with the rear seats folded. The cabin can’t quite match a VW Polo for quality, but will stand up to the rigours of daily use without any problems.

For the best fuel consumption and lowest road tax bills, go for an Ecomotive diesel. These promise 80.7mpg economy and 92g/km emissions. Just don’t discount the TSI petrol versions, many of which are cheaper to buy and won’t cost that much more to run.

If a low insurance group is a priority, pick one of the entry-level cars, although even the high-performance Ibiza FR won’t attract especially high premiums. And service intervals of 10,000 miles across the range round out a tempting financial package.
