Economy 74.3mpg, CO2/road tax: 99g/km/£0

Volkswagen Golf

The remarkable thing about the Golf BlueMotion is how unremarkable it is. To look at and drive, it’s like any other version of the hatch. However, VW claims breathtaking 74.3mpg returns – backed up by our economy marathon test (Issue 1,118) figure of 78.3mpg. Plus, 99g/km of CO2 means free road tax.

As you’d expect, the VW has a whole host of fuel-saving modifications, including stop-start, tweaked aerodynamics and taller gearing. But none of these detracts from the Golf’s polished performance as a family car champ.

The cabin has the same solid, classy feel, while there’s enough space for five adults. On the move, the refined 1.6-litre diesel delivers decent urge, and the composed chassis balances a cosseting ride with poised handling.

Some buyers will feel short-changed by this £18,000-plus car’s miserly standard kit, but 47.8 per cent residuals compensate. If you want more gadgets, you can get BlueMotion-style mechanicals on the standard Golf Match and GT – these give 68.9mpg in 1.6-litre guise and 65.7mpg on the 2.0-litre versions.
