Richard Ingram

Richard has been part of the team for over a decade. During this time he has covered a huge amount of news and reviews for Auto Express, as well as being the face of Carbuyer and DrivingElectric on Youtube. In his current role as deputy editor, he is now responsible for keeping our content flowing and managing our team of talented writers.

He’s also crafted a niche as our go-to EV expert – something the industry acknowledged in 2022 when he was awarded Newspress EV Writer of the Year.

Rich says…

“My role is mainly focused across sister sites Carbuyer and DrivingElectric, but I remain a regular contributor to Auto Express as well. The thing I love most about my job is the variety; producing content about cars real people buy, I’ll be reviewing a Range Rover one minute, and digging into the range and specs of an electric supermini the next. I’m a huge EV advocate, in fact, but take great pride in helping people choose the right car for their needs – electric or otherwise.”

Rich's main areas of expertise

  • Electric and hybrid cars
  • Family cars
  • Buying advice
  • Deals and finance
  • Video reviews and new-car launches

Rich Ingram Q&A

Q: What was your first car?

"The answer to this comes in two parts. I grew up in rural Worcestershire, and being friends with the local farmer I was playing with tractors and quad bikes from a very young age. So when the opportunity came about to buy a 1983 Ford Fiesta as a rough-and-ready field car, I jumped at the opportunity. I ran it into the ground, pulling handbrake turns and changing tyres, but it never let me down. Three years later I scraped through my driving test (first time) and spent the foreseeable driving the winding A and B-roads around my childhood home in a dinky Mk2 SEAT Arosa – all 49bhp of it!"

Q: What is your dream car?

A: "In some ways, I’ve got my dream car: a 1976 BMW 2002 in vibrant Inka Orange. It’s my pride and joy and I’m not sure I’ll ever sell it. However, when I’m asked about the one car I’d like to drive before I die, I only ever have one answer – a Porsche Carrera GT. It’s got a screaming V10 engine, manual gearbox, and no roof. I don’t think for a second it would be an easy car to tame, but I’d certainly relish the opportunity to try."

Q: If you could change one thing about cars, driving or the car industry today what would it be?

A: "Traffic. Our roads are getting busier and busier, and sitting in traffic now seems part of our daily routine. Not an easy problem to fix, granted, but I wish there was an easy way to lessen the load on our already congested infrastructure."
