Used buyer's guide: Audi A3

The Audi A3 is about to be replaced, and looks more tempting than ever used

With an all-new A3 on the way, values of the current model may soften. But don’t expect major bargains, because the MkII car remains as desirable as ever. You’ll have your work cut out just trying to establish which is the right model for you, but whatever you buy you’ll love every minute of ownership. There’s a good reason why Audi enjoys the reputation it does.

Ever since the original was launched in 1996, the Audi A3 has come to define the compact luxury car market, with its discreet lines, bulletproof build quality and massive choice of engines, trims, transmissions and bodystyles.

Even though it’s based on a Volkswagen Golf platform, buyers will happily pay a premium for the car’s classy cabin, combined with some great engineering. Throw in decent practicality, and the A3 makes lots of sense – but high list prices and strong residuals mean nice ones don’t come cheap.

History

The second-generation A3 arrived in May 2003, with a wide choice of engines and trims. Within three months, the range had been boosted by a 1.6 FSI, while in July 2004, a 2.0 TFSI petrol and five-door Sportback were introduced.

In May 2006, the 2.0 TDI 170 went on sale, with quattro 4WD as an option. A 1.8 TFSI and hot S3 arrived in October 2006. A 1.4 TFSI petrol launched in May 2007, and the frugal 1.9 TDIe that October.

The A3 Cabriolet appeared in spring 2008, at the same time as the range got a facelift, then in July 2009 a 1.6 TDI was added. Six months later, this was tweaked to cut emissions to only 99g/km.

Alternatives

The A3's closest rival is the efficient, well built, good to drive and equally costly BMW 1 Series. The VW Golf also comes with a huge combination of engines, trims, transmissions and bodystyles, and has a rock-solid image.

The Ford Focus is great to drive, plus there are lots to choose from, while costs are keen. The low-rent image puts off some buyers, though.

Also look at the less discreet Honda Civic. It’s well built and good to drive, but those space-age looks are an acquired taste.
